Paan is a mixture of betel nut, spices, tobacco and lime that taxi and rickshaw drivers constantly chew. It produces a faint buzz and an enormous amount of bright red saliva, which is spit all over the street. I was given some at an upscale dinner party and was embarrassed to drool constantly into the spittoon for a couple of minutes before giving up on it.
