On my final day in Dhaka, the monsoon season began. After just an hour of heavy rain, the entire center of the city was swamped. I was on my way out, but getting to the airport wasn’t so easy. Traffic came to a complete standstill because old cars quickly stall with flooded batteries. I had to wade through the water with my bags for about 500 meters to find a street where anything was moving, and it took a cycle rickshaw and no less than four taxis to get to the airport- after each one stalled, I’d get out and find another. Three hours for a 9-mile trip.
