Tarawa 03

Kiribati, Central Pacific

Flying into Tarawa, the contrast between the ocean beach on the east (left), and the lagoon beach on the west is noticeable in both the colour of the water and the sand. Mainly coconut palms fringe the ocean beach, whilst mangroves are more prevalent on the lagoon side. The cluster of buildings with the green roofs is the Tarawa hospital.

My brother and I together with one other builder and the help of local labour supplied by a Mr. Fakaofa, build the U.S.P. centre and two houses on Tarawa in 1978, in the vilage of "Teorarake" but I think I got the spelling wrong. There was a Mr. McGhee, a clerck of works, working there at the time, he was just like us from New Zealand.
David, seeing these photographs after all these years brought back fond memories.
I must dig out my photographs.

Thank you

***HAPPY GREETINGS FROM NORTHERN CALIFORNIA - U.S.A.***
David, this is an outstanding photo gallery. the scenery and people are most beautiful. CONGRATULATIONS! while there are many favorites, i selected the photo above. it has a quasi-abstract appeal...the swaying of the long distant road, sand, water, greenery on either side, and several roof tops along the way. tour my abstract art gallery and post your comments: www.pbase.com/lille_mcghee
