In 1974, daredevil motorcyclist Evel Knievel attempted to jump the Snake River about a mile east of here. His steam-powered "Skycycle" was more of a rocket ship than a motorcycle. In any case, the attempt fizzled when the chute on Knievel's "cycle" deployed a moment after liftoff, and the contraption floated down to the south bank of the river. Perhaps this was just as well, since it's not certain that if the Sky Cycle had reached the opposite bank that he would have survived the landing.
