In June 1876, Kaitakushi (the government of Hokkaido Development Commission)
appointed as brewmaster Mr Seibi Nakagawa, who had studied the art of brewing
beer in Germany. Construction of a brewery (not the one in the above picture) was
completed in September of the same year.
In 1877 Sapporo Reisei (cold) was launched. Sapporo Reisei Beer bore on its label
an image of the pole star, the symbol of Kaitakushi. This was the birth of Sapporo Beer.
