THE DOG

Kind of sad to come across a grave marked 'The Dog'
Buried amongst the rock and sagbrush of the desert prairie.
Makes one stop to ponder
What his life might have been
Was he some cowpoke's herdin' dog
Was he that sheepherder's workin' dog
Could he have been the family pup
and are those tear stains from a child's sob
Did he work those cows with a joy only he knows
Did he run and play and make her giggle with delight
Did he lick her face and chase the chickens all night
We'll never know and can only surmise
It's quiet now on top of that hill
The winds kick up the dust and whisper the past
I only hope his days at the end
Were filled with the love that he had surely once given
Rest In Peace The Dog
