The pink ticket out

Sarajevo

Here I am at Sarajevo Airport, waiting for a flight out on "Maybe Airlines," the shuttle the UN ran between Split and Sarajevo. In my hand I've got the pink ticket which will allow me to board a Hercules cargo plane if there's space. The shuttle was a great service to reporters who covered the war. It could be really tough to get on a flight going into the city, and sometimes you'd wait a week to fly out. A flak jacket and helmet were both required. But there was seldom another option, other than driving. I once paid 80 DM for a liter of gasoline so I could drive out. American planes did not participate. It was frustrating to see the Alaska National Guard Hercs and know that I wasn't welcome. Usually I flew on a German or British flight. This photo was taken in Dec. '93, either by Maggie O'Kane of The Guardian or Reijo Ruokannen of Iltalehti.

The American hercs did not fly journalists. All other nations did. The US planes flying the airlift were from the the Alaska National Guard, as I stated in the caption, and also from the Kentucky National Guard. There's no such thing as the "American National Guard."

Hi With regards to there being no US C130s this is incorrect as myself and two other NGO medics flew in on a US a/c with an American National Guard aircrew Sept 93 (uniforms and parachutes were DOD issue)
Good phots and well balanced spread.
