Here I am at Sarajevo Airport, waiting for a flight out on "Maybe Airlines," the shuttle the UN ran between Split and Sarajevo. In my hand I've got the pink ticket which will allow me to board a Hercules cargo plane if there's space. The shuttle was a great service to reporters who covered the war. It could be really tough to get on a flight going into the city, and sometimes you'd wait a week to fly out. A flak jacket and helmet were both required. But there was seldom another option, other than driving. I once paid 80 DM for a liter of gasoline so I could drive out. American planes did not participate. It was frustrating to see the Alaska National Guard Hercs and know that I wasn't welcome. Usually I flew on a German or British flight. This photo was taken in Dec. '93, either by Maggie O'Kane of The Guardian or Reijo Ruokannen of Iltalehti.
