Turquoise Water Colour

Green Lakes State Park, Fayetteville, NY

Green Lake is one of 3 meromictic lakes in Onondaga County. Meromictic lakes are defined as post-glacial plunge pools which are deeper than they are wide, thereby never allowing the bottom and upper water levels to mix or "turn over" in Spring and Fall as all other lakes do. This lack of oxygen in the lowest depths is very exciting as biologic organisms won't decompose, and meromictic lakes are therefore a treasure trove of antiquities! The water colour of this Green Lake is indicative of it's great depth of 195' and the reflection of some mid and upper level bacteria. As you can see, the water depth plummets immediately from the shoreline, turning it into a veritable jewel-like turquoise.
