Peel Crags,is the name of the cliff edged hill,in shadow in this shot.
At this point,Hadrian's Wall's remains are in the care of the National Trust.But,in order to save money,the Wall has been reconstructed,on it's original line,to a height of several feet,but as a dry stone wall edging,with an earth core and on top.This has resulted in many localised collapses(see image) and a particularly bad collapse on the outer(northern)face of the Wall just over the hillock in shot.On Peel Crags,you will see that the Wall has been partially reconstructed,then a narrower wall has been built on top.This gives a false picture of how the original was constructed.The Romans would not have used such a technique as it would have favoured the enemy,giving them a fighting platform on the Wall itself.
