As I was out one late afternoon taking hummingbird pictures, 'Rocky' soared in from nowhere and landed on the hummingbird feeder. He appeared quite lost and dazed. Afterwards, he took a nose-dive into a nearby tree, then perched on a leaf for the longest while - perhaps dazzled by his own reflection (or frightened).
A few notes on cicadas: A cicada's life span may be as long as 17 years, much of that spent underground. Shortly after the adult male mates, he dies. The female can deposit as many as 600 eggs (that's a lot of cicadas!). Although cicadas are incorrectly referred to as locusts (ie grasshoppers), they are more closely related to aphids. In addition, they are harmless to humans (no biting, no transferable diseases). However, trees can suffer harm via the deposit of the eggs of the female but that can also be a good thing as it acts as a natural pruning process. Only the males sing. Adult cicadas do not eat but are thought to take in fluids for hydration purposes. Probably more than you wanted to know, isn't it?
