Mop and pail, Pingyao, China, 2007

The day begins for Pingyao's small businesses with a scrubdown. This woman is ready to go to work. This image asks us more questions than it answers. What does the Chinese words chalked on the door panels mean? What are the garments hanging on those racks? And what kind of business goes on within? The body language of the young woman speaks eloquently. She takes a firm stance, her red shoes complementing her red jacket. She is wary of the camera, not sure how to respond. She neither smiles nor frowns but seems to wait for me to make my picture and move on, leaving the viewer to answer the questions raised by this image.

(After I posted this image, Kal Khogali linked me to an image he made in Shanghai two years earlier. You can see
it at http://upload.pbase.com/image/86634619 The two women may be separated by both generation and geography, yet
they share a task and a culture that makes a remarkable comparison.)

Yes, there is a sense of resignation here, Sofia. She is under no illusions. Her work is hard, and so is her life.

Looks she knows how her day will begin and end, she knows it all. V

Thanks, Ade, for coming to this image and enjoying it. It pretty much defines the nature of the workplace in a small Chinese rural town.

Thanks, Patrick -- I am glad you enjoyed this image, and I hope the questions it asks will prod your imagination as much as they do mine.

Thanks, Kal, for posting your mop lady. I have linked it to this picture in my caption, but will repeat that

I would love to see your mop lady, Kal. We saw them all over China, but the costume, stance and expression of this particular lady was very special.

Ha! As you might guess I have an endless archive of images of Shanghai that I have never posted. ONe of which is not dissimilar to this, but is complimentray in a message of continuity. I took it when Jen was with me in 2006. Those mops will never go out of fashion. I will post it soon. Love it. K

Thanks, Dogus -- I think it is a barber shop or hair stylist. It was the red jacket and sneakers that made me stop and make this picture. I see that you and Alina fear for my safety here. As I told Alina, this woman did not really know I was taking her picture. I never lifted the camera to my eye, and I rarely looked at her. Her expression shows her bewilderment. She is wary, but can't quite figure me out.

Here is a funny dialog I have just imagined:

Woman: Don't bother me. Mind your own business!
Phil : Sorry for bothering you, miss; but this is my own business.
Woman: See this mop?

I guess here is a barber's place if we take the big cozy chair and mirror-like wall at the left, inside. I liked the red jacked and the sneakers complementing each other. It is anoher proof of an essential fact: Women care about looking beautiful; wherever and however they are.

You are right. Anyone with a stick in the hand is to be avoided. I was never in any danger here. I don't she understood that I was photographing her. I hold my camera at waist level and looked into the flip up viewfinder. After I framed her, I looked everywhere but at her, and gently squeezed the shutter. She had no idea I had taken her picture.

Phil, I would be afraid to take that photo. Women armed with mop can be dangerous ;)
