Chorus of the Gods, Batu Caves, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 2007

The deities atop the roof of the Hindu Temple at the base of the stairway to the Batu Caves seem to be chanting in unison, as a storm gathers overhead. I immediately saw the rhythmic repetition in the subject itself. To make it work as expression, I abstract the figures by silhouetting them against the late afternoon sky, exposing for the brightest part of the image. This calls attention to their body language instead of drawing attention to their ornate appearance. That body language is rhythmic in itself – arms upraised, symbols in hand, the statues appear to singing as a chorus. There was virtually no color in the leaden sky, so I converted the digital file to black and white. The image becomes universal and timeless, truly a Chorus of the Gods.

Thanks, Tricia, for coming to this image. I did not post my shot of one of these statues with the bird in the sky because I did not want to use two images of essentially the same subject, and I wanted to post this image in my new Rhythms and Patterns gallery. Thanks for your kind words on the image -- the Chorus of the Gods. The sky was incredible at that moment. I enjoyed shooting this building with you in Kuala Lumpur, and am glad you came away from that afternoon with something of value. I love your image of those birds flying over this same temple (http://www.pbase.com/flowsnow/image/85076780 ) The ears of the cow echo the wings of those birds.

I was hoping you would post that image of the statue and the bird in the sky. I was looking at it everywhere but can't find it. Nevertheless you have captured these statues brilliantly and I like the way you perceive it. My photography thoughts have never been the same than. Thank you, Phil.
