Workers, Shanghai, China, 2007

While these grinning construction workers were happily posing for the four other photographers in our group, I moved well over to one side, aligning them with the pattern created by the colored boards hanging on the wall behind them. The boards rhythmically carry the eye through the picture, and reinforce the echoing body language of the arms and hands of the workers.

Thanks, Sofia, for being the first to comment on this picture. I love candid responses. These men were posing for my friends, who were shooting them from another position. Because they were not looking at me, it seems as if I have caught them having their picture taken while they were supposed to be hard at work. I like the colored boards, too -- and those wonderful arms and hands are as expressive as their grins.
