The Tafiychuk family (the father Mykhailo with 3 sons) comes from the Hutsul village of Bukovec located between Kosovo and Werkhovyna in Ukrainian Carpathians.
The band passionately cultivates the incredibly rich local tradition, and especially its enchanted musical element. Their music is a canon of hutsul folklore – trance-like, locked in just few chords, but richly embellished with ornamentation on fiddle and sopilka, ritual forms or unbelievably fast Hutsul dances; also, sometimes solo performances of contemplative, terse forms of shepherd music.
As a local and family band, the Tafiychuks value above all the peaceful life in harmony with their centuries-long tradition, and local reputation.
Mykhailo Tafiychuk is also one of the last masters of the craft of Hutsul instrument building – sopilkas, bagpipes, trombitas, floyars, hurdy-gurdies. The house of Tafiychuks is an incessant destination of pilgrimages for music ethnographers from all around the world.
The band:
Mykhailo Tafiychuk – fiddle, floyara, bagpipe
Dmytro Tafiychuk – drum
Mykola Tafiychuk – hammered dulcimer
Yuriy Tafiychuk – sopilka, telenka, montelyev
