Second Place: Part Monster by Derek Matthew

Toronto, Canada

I produced too much of something
Not enough of something else
But the doctors cannot help me
With the puzzle of my health
And I'm tired of easy music
And I'm tired of pretty girls
And I'm tired of being tired
and I'm tired of being hurt...

I am the soldier at the back
Who is burdened by his books
Though I stare into the mirror
It does not tell me how I look...

So I'm shaving in the darkness
And I'm turning in my sleep
And I'm turning like a monster
With a dead man in his teeth

Oh oh, part monster
Oh oh, part monster
Oh oh, part monster
...

I have tried to explain w h y I appreciate your photo because the why is more convincing for others than the that.
"Directness" and "honesty" are complicated concepts with regard to a self portrait as the self is always a construct, even for the privileged access of oneself to one's self.

Hans does this mean you like it? I have done quite a few of these close-ups.... this one seems to be the most palpable thus far. And, has an aspect of directness and honesty about it.

It seems to me that you got this somehow classic photo in reward for your repeated efforts to portray yourself. Occam's razor applying you reach a degree of abstraction and concentration that the viewer thinks: that's that.
My subscriptio, regarding eyes, forehead and hand: The true vision needs more than your eyes can see, namely thinking and feeling.

I rarely post comments, but this deserves recognition. All the elements of this composition come together in perfect harmony. Great capture and excellent PP too. Well done.
