Desert Spiny Lizard

At Home, SE Arizona

Looks like another Desert Spiny Lizard to me; but, this one is at home in my yard! Wow.
First, it's like I never saw one before and now I'm seeing them everywhere. ;o)
I wonder if they are sort of seasonal?

Hi,

I teach third grade in Apache Junction, Arizona. We found a lizard in our classroom and it has stayed with us for about a week now. I leave the door open during the day to see if it will go out the door, but it sticks around. About three or four times a day while teaching, the kids will find the lizard roaming the classroom. I happened upon this site looking for the type of lizard it was. Your picture above is what we have in our class. I think it is a juvenile because it is pretty small. I am glad I found out what it was.

This is a nice juvenile Desert Spiny, Carol. As reptiles in a moderately temperate climate, there are definitely seasons of activity. They will stay underground or sheltered during the colder months (Dec - Feb), but now is just past their breeding season. I _think_ this is timed with the summer monsoons and the increased insect populations. Very nice comp and light.

I always think it's good luck to have a nice big lizard in the garden. This one's a beauty! Hope they eat all your bugs. VOTE!
