In 100 degree heat, these Welsh police officers (Heddlu De Cymru in Welsh) mingle with the crowd awaiting the start of a soccer match at Millennium Stadium. Police feared fans might attack the teams’ buses as they made their way to the stadium and provided horse escorts. Fearing hooliganism, the Cardiff train station set up separate pathways for opposing fans to get back to their trains without encountering each other. Police presence outside the stadium was heavy, though officers on the street did not carry guns. A number of police vans were on the streets as well, where weapons could be stored for use if needed.
