The Millennium Sculpture – a sculpture by local young artist Victor Tan, which was presented by ExxonMobil to the Singapore Asian Civilisations Museum as a gift to the people of Singapore on 19 Apr 2002.
With its outstretched arm towards the sky, the 1.7m-high stainless steel wire sculpture epitomises the Singaporean spirit – ever reaching for greater heights. The intricate weave of steel wires evokes the tapestry of humanity that made modern Singapore. Worked into the design of the stainless steel wire figure is DNA helix, the building block of science, representing the challenge of the new millenium : harnessing knowledge for the betterment of mankind.
I felt that this shot of the sculpture, taken from a low angle against the backdrop of the towering skyscapers of UOB Bank and OCBC Bank, among the tallest in Singapore, expressed the “can-do” spirit embodied by the sculpture perfectly.
