At Whitney portal we repacked, ate a free huge pancake, waited forever for a couple of hot dogs and set out for Upper Boy Scout Lake.

The main Mount Whitney Trail is wide, almost flat, and well maintained. About a mile or so from the trailhead, you reach the cutoff for the North Fork trail. This trail is thin, steep, and poorly maintained.
