The former commandant of Auschwitz, SS-Obersturmbannfuhrer Rudolf Höß was captured on March 1946. After testifying at Nuremberg against his superiors, he was sent back to Poland to face murder charges. He was found guilty and sentenced to death by the Polish Supreme National Tribunal. On April 16, 1947, he was executed on this gallows, where he used to hang attempt escapees.
