Now You See It, Now You Don't

by Helen Betts

Washington, D.C.

Well, don't really know if I'll leave this here, but I thought it was fun despite the flaws and my husband liked it, so here it is. I must have spent 100 exposures and an hour in front of the new National Museum of the American Indian at the Smithsonian Institution trying to catch this. Shooting into a shaded window (into diners' faces, almost), with people in bright sunlight, passing by, impossible to focus due to the way their reflections progressed through the line of windows, slow shutter speed, shallow DOF... I created such interest that some kids got out their cell phones and started taking pictures of each other in the glass :-). Maybe if I have time I'll go back and try again (unlikely, but I'd like to if possible).

Helen; I know the windows and this is both opportunistic and awesome. Well seen!! John

Bill, yes I managed to keep out of the shot, although I'm not sure how, LOL. I guess it has something to do with the way the windows are oriented, which also contributed to my having a problem getting much of it in focus. Helen

A nice shot to look at, Helen. It's a Very unique concept for a photo, which is one of your photographic qualities I have always admired. And you managed to keep yourself out of the reflections. Seems like an almost impossible goal here unless you could take multipe shots and stitch together?

Thank you, everyone. I was so fascinated by what I saw in the window (especially when two groups were passing by in different directions) that I really wanted to convey something of that, but it surely proved harder than I thought to accomplish (and this image is still a far cry from what I was looking for). But I'm glad you like it anyway! Helen

Amazing shot, Helen. Please leave it in! When looking at the thumbnail I was sure it would be a collage, but wow, I need to look a few more times to understand. I completely agree with your husband.
