Looking carefully just in front of the ears on both carvings the modern stone setters sawcut can be seen. This has been deliberately left unfilled at the surface. The entire face visages were sawn through at this point leaving the face intact top to bottom and preserving the features.
Cut blocks were then transported over two hundred metres up the hillside initially for storage then re erection.
