You raise a very interesting question...which came first, the fungus or the bark injury? Actually, there is only about a foot of tree left (30 cm)---it was stumpified. I have a feeling that the fungus is only doing clean up duty. Guess that does make fungus the vulture of the plant world. Interesting how it all fits together!
