Thanks to Jeanne Dammarell who wrote: "I have the new Kaufman Field Guide to Insects of
North America and I think I found your wasp on pages 350-351: Scolia ardens, a parasitic
wasp that lays their eggs on the larvae of scarab beetles. They range from Texas to California."

With Jeanne's information I was able to look it up on-line and confirm this. Thanks Jeanne!

i just found this species in my backyard. I live in southern california. It was near my swamp cooler in wet sand, and when i tried to kill it, it burrowed.... is it dangerous?
