Thanks Brent,
Yes the FL-50 is a wonderful flash and when you add on a flash extender you can use it at quite a distance. However this bird was near the close focus distance of about 20'. I have only had a few days experience with the hummingbirds but it does appear that the flaring of the tail feathers is part of a balance/steering thing.

The shot sure is impressive - that flash must really being goint the distance! Doesn't look like they use their tail feathers in the same way as other birds... brent

Thanks Shirley,
My experience is if you have the lens nearly focused that focus is extremely quick. I miss far more of these kind of shots simply because my reflexes are too slow to get the shutter button pressed.

Do you find that lens focuses quickly for you? It's hard to get a bird just taking off and keeping him in focus and for that big lens to focus so fast (and as you said luckily on the face) was just amazing. You make this lens look very good Bob. What a great shot.

Thanks Moncho and Catman,
This was pure luck. This little rufous hummingbird had been sitting patiently facing the opposite direction for nearly 5 minutes. Just as I was pressing the shutter, he decided to fly. Fortunately the lens AF focused on his head. They really move fast when they decide to go.

This is a very interestting image. The twig the humming bird is on appears to vibrate along with the wings but the birds head appears steady. I bet he did not sit very long. You had to be fast with the camera, good work.
