In its heyday, 50 million tons of iron ore moved through this port each year in transit to regional steel mills.
Most of those mills no longer exist, and just a few small stockpiles of ore are visible in the unloading yards.
Outbound coal shipments are the major activity today. Trainloads of coal arrive here from the mines of PA and WV.
The arch across the river supports a conveyor system that moves this coal from stockpiles to ships in the loading area.
