Summer 2007, Milky Way Overhead

Chequamegon Forest, Wisconsin

Wide field shot of the Milky Way. 3:00 am local. Pointed nearly straight up through some trees. Post processing included several steps to brighten and enhance contrast: curves, levels, dup background layer and add blur - blend mode set to linear dodge and reduce opacity. NEAT final result to soften stars and reduce noise.

I'm somewhat bugged by the fact that tree silhouettes appear on three sides. That will be disorienting to some. Picture looking straight up at the sky through an opening in some trees, and you'll get the idea exactly.

Shot from Martin Hanson's property west of Mellen, WI.

I had gone to a B&B on the California coast where the skies were really dark and one could see the milky way. I was reminded of this picture when I noticed the skies and tried to replicate this by boosting the ISO. Needless to say I failed, makes me appreciate your astrophotographs even more.
