Regal Horned Lizard

Phrynosoma solare

This one was very mellow and let me walk up to within a foot of it -- close enough for me to catch, not once, but twice. The first time I caught it so my daughters could feel the very spiny scales and horns around the head. I released it where we found it and then started taking more photos, including this one. Some other visitors to the canyon walked by and wanted to know what I was taking photos of. I asked if they wanted to touch it, and that led to me catching it a second time. This was definitely one of the more calm ones that I've had the pleasure of catching with almost no squirming around once held. I thanked it for the great meeting and let it go once again.

The ones in our yard are very friendly, too. I sometimes have a buddy follow my shadow shade when I garden.

Hi Sam, I did not know one could pick these up without getting hurt. Bravo! This is a beautiful image of this Lizard. Wonderful color and detail. Vote.
