Substituting an older picture today. I was thinking of all the books and movies (fact and fiction) whose last scene sees the doomed main characters watching the last means of escape fly/sail/etc. away. The last 747 escaping a besieged South Africa; the last helicopter leaving Vietnam, the last boat being lowered from the Titanic...
Nadine Gordimer's title seemed most appropriate but there are so many. In today's entertainment, whenever Hollywood closes a door somewhere it opens a window, and this kind of ending is vaguely unsatisfying. But the emotions these remnants have to face seem some of the most alien to me, and difficult to imagine.
Guess it was a little dark in my head today.
