BLACK VULTURE (Coragyps atratus)

Myakka River State Park - Sarasota, Florida

Vultures have long been perceived as loathsome creatures because of their repulsive feeding habits. We now know, however, the important role these SCAVAGING birds fulfill by "recycling" the carcasses of dead animals. In 1994, as a result of DNA analysis and studies of anatomy, physiology, behavior, and cellular biology, the vultures have been reclassified from birds of prey to members of the STORK family.
