Egyptian Woman Demonstrating the Making of Papyrus

Cairo, Egypt

My observations and reading, and my conversations in Egypt lead me to at least one tentative conclusion: the middle-aged men and the young women are the most religious Egyptians. The older men have bruises and scarring on their foreheads from years of earnestly prostrating themselves before God. If you plan to conduct business with them in the middle of the day---in particular on Friday---it is best to relax and go with the flow. They will excuse themselves, often holding up one hand, displaying their fingers and saying, "Five minutes. Five minutes." They return from prayer three quarters of an hour later, unburdened and sometimes in a jovial mood. With the young women there is no bruising, yet the earnestness is definitely there, as one can read in the face of the beautiful woman at the Papyrus Museum.
