This trail meanders through a heath bald which covers the peaks of Craggy Gardens on the Blue Ridge. Heath balds are composed of member of the heath family: rhododendron, flame azaleas, blue berry, sand myrtle, etc. Once they become established in an area they dominate by secreting an enzyme through their root system that inhibits the growth of rival plants. In bloom they are spectacular.
This particular trail gains about 300' in 3/4 of a mile and leads to a rocky perch high above the roadway. The view is wonderful.
