The Red Junglefowl is the wild ancestor of all domestic chickens, and birds of this species were brought to Hawaii long ago by the Polynesian ancestors of the present-day native Hawaiians. Feral chickens like this one, with more or less of the original wild strain in them, roam freely in Kauai; this one has some features of the wild junglefowl, but is clearly a mixture.
