I attended PS 70 between 1940 and 1948. I lived across the street at 1664 Weeks Avenue, Apt. 2B with windows facing the (below street level) schoolyard. Your stories brought back many memories. I am surprised that no-one mentioned the huge waterbugs in the pool area. I can't recall all my teachers' names. Ones that do come to mind are Ms. Young, Ms. Schlessinger, Ms. Abrams, Ms. Michaels. Mr Tuttleman was the orchestra and stamp collector club leader. (I played violin and collected stamps). Mr. Morris Scherer was Principal.

Hi everyone, it's really lovely reading your stories.

I'm posting because I'm working as a researcher on a biography of the novelist E.L. Doctorow, who grew up in the neighborhood. Doctorow wrote about a car accident that happened near the school in which a woman was killed. The car apparently came to rest in P.S. 70's playground. This probably would have been in the mid to late 1930s. Does anyone have any memory of this? If so, please reach out to me at crrgn.miller@gmail.com. Thanks, and take care!

I went there from about 1941 to 1947. It was a great school. I won the science contest in the auditorium in the 6th grade in front of the whole school. My favorite teacher was Mr Tuttleman. The worst was Ms Stegman. I walked to school every day and walked home for lunch before heading back to school. I lived in the Lewis Morris on the grand Concourse.I vaguely remember a swimming pool.We had exercises on the roof which was enclosed.

I would cross the Grand Concourse by going thru the subway underpass. One of my favorite teachers was Mr.Tuttleman.I think he was the music teacher A horrible teacher was Mrs Stegman. I have a large photo of all my classmates.

I went to PS 70 from 1948 thru six grade. Mr Orange was my favorite. Fond memories of the school and the friends I made there

I attended PS/CES 70 from 1969 to 1973 for K-3rd before moving to Kingsbridge. Our first homework assignment was to watch this new TV show called Sesame Street. Some teachers I remember were Ms. Morgan, Ms. Lewis and Ms. Steinberg (we stopped using Miss & Mrs.). Classmates included Albert C., Walter J., Rory R., Otto V., Paul C., Robert K, William M., Kimberly B., Claudia A. and Lavorne B. We swam in the pool, had recess in the yard (until the mini schools arrived) and sometimes even played on the enclosed roof. Also joined cub scouts, played violin, competed in chess matches. I wonder if they still have these activities.

I came to Hebrew Children's Shelter in 1955, and attended PS 70 for the year.
I was in Mr. Orange's fifth grade class. He was a great teacher.
He really made it easy for me since I was a new student. I transferred from PS 33 in Chelsea.
It was a wonderful time back then. I swam in the pool, and played "throw ball" in the gym.
I will never forget my brief time at PS 70. I was sorry that I was unable to come back since I was transfered to a school in Nanuet in Rockland County.

Attended summer swim SESSIONS at PS70, with the instructor Doc Brown. We were subjected to nude inspections and humiliations. The man was clearly a voyeur, and a sexual predictor. No way we would ever let this happen today
!

Do you think it would be possible to get a list of names from the school for a particular class in the 1950's? I have class photos but only wrote down first names.

I went to PS 70 from 1951-57 and I lived diagonally across from it at 1664 Weeks Avenue (the building has since been torn down and replaced with a community garden. I later attended Wade JHS and then Taft HS. I lived in the Bronx until I was 19 when my family moved to Bayside, Queens. Great memories, and I'm still friends with a few of my classmates/neighbors

Hi.i attended p.s 70 in the early 50’s. Does anyone have knowledge or recall any sexual assault or misconduct by the boys swim instructor?
don 09-Aug-2020 00:47
I attended P.S. 70 between 1947 (kindergarten) and 1952 (6th grade). My grandmother lived across Eastburn Avenue and my mother used to haul lunch for my sister and I most days, about 6 blocks away, to eat at my grandmother's.
I remember several teachers - Mrs. Sussman, 1st grade, Miss Lauricella - kindergarten, Miss Michaels in 2nd, Mrs. Rosenblum 3d Mrs. Moses in 4th Mrs. Stark in 5th and Mr Aaron Orange in 6th. He was in charge of the school Newspaper for which I wrote an article about the drought afflicting NY City that year. Mrs. Halpern was the nature teacher. Mr. Tuttleman was the "music" teacher and played the accordion at some school functions. I remember the pool but avoided it because of modesty - boys had to swim naked! I learned to swim in the Catskill mountains where we went as a family every summer at a resort hotel. I continued to visit that hotel as I got older and worked there as a bellhop and golf caddy. Suring those years both Mrs. Halpern and Mr Tuttleman visited that hotel as guests when I was 15 or 16. Other things I remember are the hand-rolled cigar store that faced 174th street across Eastburn Avenue from the school. The cigar makers sat in front of a window and were a source of fascinated observations of how the cigars took shape. The next store, closer to Eastburn was a shoe repair shop where the shoemakers were also on display. That's more than I thought I could remember and quite enough for anyone to digest. I'm 80 years old this year and the memories of P.S. 70 remain vividly impressed in my frontal lobes. Don R.
Cheryl Anne Harper 05-Jun-2020 01:48
I went to C.E.S. 70 in 82-5th grade. My Dad, Randolph, used to take me to the store before school to buy me cake. He would always be waiting for me outside the yard gate when school let out. I love my Dad. I miss him so much. Daddy bought me patent leather shoes for my very first day of school. He was a great Daddy. I will love him always. All the way from Heaven. May Almighty God take care of my Papa. That was such a kind gift that God gave me. Daddy was not only my Dad, but he was the only mother I ever had. I miss you, Daddy.

I went to PS70 from first grade to fourth grade (1944 through 1947). They had a pool and that is where I learned to swim. I still have good memories of it and I am now 81 years old.

I attended PS70 from 1956-1958 (4th-6th grade). We originally lived on Featherbed Lane but had to move because the building was being torn down. Relocated to 273 E 176th St;I was allowed to finish PS70 while my brother was transferred to PS28. My best memories (in no particular order) were: the pool, playing kickball on the roof, coming to school early so we could play punchball in the schoolyard, and being in the orchestra in the 6th grade. To get out early I joined the ranks of the crossing guards - made it to LT but regretted never being a Captain :). I also have fond memories of attending Hebrew School not far from PS70 but can't remember the name. What I do remember vividly was coming home one day in October to find out I had missed Don Larsen's perfect game!!!. Our kids both went to the University of Connecticut so we drove from our home in Maryland to take them to UCONN at the start of the school year. I never missed a chance to point out PS70 as we drove on the Cross Bronx Expressway!!!. My one goal living on 176th st was to eventually live on the Grand Concourse. My wife and I lived at 1075 Grand Concourse for 4 years while I went to NYU Graduate School. I have very fond memories of living in the Bronx and appreciate reading the other comments on this site.

I was talking with my daughter and grandson about the old days and could not stop talking about P.S. 70, probably, for its time, the best elementary school in the U.S. I graduated from P.S. 70 in January 1942 and remember its weekend baseball games, evening basket ball games -Radars against the Snocaps. The streets were ours to play and Claremont Park to sleep on torrid nights. Weren't we lucky!
Nina 14-Sep-2016 14:55
I lived at 1701 Eastburn Ave. directly across from PS 70 from 1947-52. Walked across the street to school from K through the middle of 5th grade when we moved to Putnam County, NY. I remember changing into bathing suits in cramped little locker rooms, the annual Maypole dance outdoors, best of all: the kind, excellent teachers. Mrs. Halpern in 5th grade is the only name I recall. My class photos are lost. So many memories!
Kiana 28-Aug-2016 02:15

I went to PS 70 from 1952-1956--kindergarten through 3rd grade when we moved to Riverdale. I walked to school with friends from my building 1755 Clay Ave and block everyday. Writing memoir and would love to hear from those kids and get their memories of those carefree days.

I attended PS 70 from 1949-1955 and have all of my class pictures, three of which include my teachers. They were, first thru sixth grade, Sussman, Etlin, Young, Davidson, Orange, and Stark. Those were memorable years. We swam naked as we received swimming instruction; I knew Doc Brown from the summer, free swim times, and was he a character! Spring saw the Maypole event in the school yard--long before the "temporary" classrooms filled the space--as well as the after school softball and summer stick ball games. We all felt safe at school. it was an era when teaches dressed very professionally and kids behaved. We lived at 1660 Monroe Ave. and I visit or walk by PS 70 every so often, as recently as Feb. 11, 2015. It is sad and painful to see what has happened to the "old neighborhood" but change is what it is.

I went to P.S. 70 between 1961-1968 - K-6. Mrs. McAuliff was principal and told us we were to walk the halls as if we had slippers on. Mr. Ryan was my 5th grade teacher.

Went to P.S. 70 from 1961-1968 K-6. I had Mr. Ryan for 5th we didn't see the pool or the roof. We played on the school grounds. I remember dancing around a pole for May Day. Our principal was Mrs. McAuliff - who said we were to walk the halls as if we were wearing soft slippers.
Bob Schwartz 18-Sep-2014 17:33
I went to PS 70 from Kindergarten through 6th grade in the 1950s. Miss Rojick and Miss Turpin for Kindergarten. Miss Pearl L. Spatz for 6th grade. Miss Youngstein for 4th grade. Miss Jacobson for second grade. I learned to play the clarinet in the music class in 5th grade Ms. Rosen's class and in 6th grade. I was in the school orchestra. I was in the play "Carousel" and played Billy Bigelow, the John Raitt part. Mr. Gebel attempted to teach us how to swim in the pool. I remember getting the Salk polio vaccine in a queue at school. It was great going home for lunch but my mother started packing lunch for me in my Hopalong Cassidy lunch box. I had sandwiches-cream cheese and jelly, peanut butter and jelly or tuna, celery and mayonnaise with Scotch Ice to keep it cold. The neighborhood was so safe then. There was no fear in school or getting to and from school. The teachers were all so dedicated and so kind and polite to the students. Of course the students treated the teachers with the utmost respect. The good old days.

I went to this school C.E.S. 70 from 70- 76 and it was still a pretty good school then. The best teacher I ever had was my fifth grade teacher Elliot Berger. He realized I was having trouble learning my multiplication tables so he decided to spend his lunch period tutoring me and several other kids, thanks Mr. Berger, I'm very grateful to you for that. I remember the swimming pool too. I loved the Library around the corner and Claremont Park was pretty nice back then.
Jerry Sussman 16-Dec-2013 00:36
My memories of PS 70 go way back. I attended there in the 1930's, when it was a K-8 school;
it had been built in 1927. There were three separate gyms for younger and older kids, and a
play area on the roof under a steel enclosure. The pool in the basement was full size; the swim teacher was Mr. Bohan. There was a wonderful kindergarten with teachers Mrs. Schlesinger and Miss Knight. Sometime around fifth grade they opened Wade Jr. High and 70
was cut back to six grades. It was a time when there were no black or Latino residents in the neighborhood. The lesson in diversity I learned later in life, when I moved to Seattle. We were mostly Jewish, Italian families, and a few Irish too. We were not rich working-class people who didn't own cars. We could play stickball in the street with no
disturbance: when a car came along the outfielder would yell Car! and we'd let him go by.
Our main playground was Claremont Park where we could roam around all summer. The park was renovated in the 30's by a big crew of laborers employed by the WPA. These workers, many of them skilled stonemasons and landscapers were often immigrants from Italy and Yugoslavia. My memories of the time are rich and wonderful.

I attended from 65-71. Lived on Monroe. I don't remember any of my teachers except for Mr. Rich. I had him in 4th grade and again in 6th. My class was the first to get bused to McCombs Junior High School in the Heights instead of going to Wade. I believe that was the beginning of the decline in the area. Great memories ....

Boy I can remember getting undressed in the locker room in the winter time freezing while heading to the pool. I jsut had a conversation with my wife about NY and how growing up in NY was the best experiance a kid can have. Both my brother, Victor Cardona and sister Victoria Cardona attended PS 70. Thanks for the memories Raymond Arroyo.

I remember way back before they even built those building in the yard. I went there from kindergarden to 4th grade and 4th grade was spent in that building with a teacher that wore a a brown foundation while her neck told a different story. I learned how to swim at that pool. I used to live 1704 morris avenue. Those were the days when a kid could be a kid and elevator raceway was the game in my building.

Wow!! I didn't go to PS 70 growing up.. but I know this school so well A dear and close friend of mine lives directly across the street from this school on the first floor. She has been there for many, many years. Her daughter went to this school, she sits by the window as my dad does and I do when I visit home. Waving and saying hello and watching the kids, people going by. My cousins all went to this school when they lived at 1663 Eastburn Ave.. and I remember playing handball and rollerskating in the yard. Great Memories.. Thanks for sharing!!

I was a student at ps.70 for only 2 years (1967-1968)and had the most caring teachers a human being could ever want. I was in the Hebrew Children's Home for Boys and my parents were not around at the time. Mrs.Weingarten and Mrs. Rosenbaum made me feel like I was one of their own children and I am forever grateful.

Still remember my teachers, though. Kindergarden: Mrs. Young and Mrs. Slesinger; First grade: Mrs. O'Rourke; Second grade: Mrs. Isaacs; Fourth grade: Mrs. Lottie Bergen Burack; Fifth grade: Mr. Tuttleman; and finally the Sixth grade: Mrs. Meyrowitz. I wonder if there is anyone else out there who remembers the same teachers.

I had so MUCH fun there. Everybody knew me to be one of the best M. C.'s, one of the best Electric Boogie Dancer's and one of the best fighters in the whole school(I was'nt a school bully). The Older guys at the time use to do a boxing style Called"Jail house rock" and/or "52 Block" and I was one of the nicest at it. My M. C. name at the time was "E.T.", short for my birthname Eternal. I use to live on Weeks ave(MY grandmother still lives on weeks ave), then I moved to 172nd st & the Grand concourse. I remember that old abandoned building across the street from 70 school yard. I went to P.S 70 from kindergarten thru 6th grade. 1963-1970 Graduated 6th grade there. Then my parents did what so many people in the area did. Move to Coop-City. When I think of the Bronx this is what I think of and love. I have so many memories of P.S 70. Walking home for lunch everyday. Wanting to eat lunch in school. Swimming, assemblies in the auditorium, where all the children had to wear a white shirt.Boys had to wear a red tie too. You got into big trouble if you didn't wear a white shirt. I remember the front stair case and the back stair case leading to the basement pool. And the big main entrance way With the main office and Principals office opposite the auditorium. It was a great school.

I went to Kindergarten at PS 70 in 1958/59. We lived acrossed the street from the back of Taft HS at 1470 Morris Ave. I think the building was torn down several years ago. We moved up to the Fordham Road area in 1960 but I have vivid memories of the old neighborhood. Thanks for posting these great pix!

I attended PS70 from 1965-1969. Although I remember certain things about attending school there, there are other things that I don't remember (like former classmates names). I remember the pool of course. I remember that kids were awarded a pin if they could swim across the pool. I never did get a pin, but that is because they didn't teach swimming there. They had a pool, but didn't teach swimming??? odd isn't it? I don't remember having to be nude to go in that pool. Perhaps that was from an earlier decade. I remember, Mrs. Walker, Mr. Causman (sp) and my class 5-513; where I learned to play saxophone. Wonderful!!

I grew up at 1755 Weeks Ave. just up the block from PS 70. My family lived in that building from before I was born in the early 1950's to 1969. I remember walking home for lunch everyday and playing in the school yard. It was a wonderful place to grow up.

Thank you for posting these photos. It made for a loverly trip down memory lane.

Thanks for the memories...like the guest above I went to PS 70 in 1973! Went from 3 to 5th grade & moved from the brick to the portable in the yard. I loved the pool & the TV dinners sometimes served for lunch...I used to live in the Lewis Morris with its 4 sub basements, huge, lots of places to play & get lost and 7 elevators. I can remember the lobby being this huge square space and dependent on where you lived you walk over to that section of the square to catch the elevator. I can remember some apartments having a "secret" entrance to a staircase that was old & dusty (must have been a servants entrance long ago). From what I understand, the building has been chopped up & the grand lobby no longer looks the same. We used to think of it as the last of the doorman buildings in the Bronx. I moved away in 1976. Thanks for the memories.

What a great trip down memory lane. I lived at 1504 Sheridan Ave across from Taft High School and attended PS 70 until 1952 when we moved to CA. I too have vivid memories of the pool in the basement.

I had an opportunity to travel to NY city on business in 1996 and wanted to visit the old neighborhood to see how much it had changed. Unfortunately, none of the taxi drivers would take me there because they claimed it was a high crime area....really bummed me out.

However, if you type in an address in the Bronx [like my old bldg] on Google Earth, you'll find that many addresses have photos that allow you to view the entire neighborhood in a virtual 360 degree environment...very cool.

I went to school there in the 1960's. I also remember the pool. I lived across the street on Weeks Ave. My building has since been torn down. I also lived the in the Lewis Morris Building on the Walton Avenue side. The steps you show in the pictures were my playground. These pics bring back so many memories.

The P.S. 70 building has been renovated, including the pool. My father went to P.S. 70 and learned how to swim there (My guess around 1930+). And I and my brothers also learned how to swim there. One week the boys (No swimming trunks) use the pool the next week just showers. On alternate weeks the girls used the pool (with swimmng atire). I recall being asked to roll the towel cart to the girls door on the other side of the pool area.. and hearing screaming girls regarding me (a boy dressed however) showing up!!! Wow, I still remember the pool being so cold! Further, I also remember playing softball in the school yard (and no portable school room buildings).

I was a student at this school from 1974-1978 (Kindergarten through 4th grades). I remember a few teachers - Mrs. Smollen, Mrs. Ebe, Mrs. Trabelsee (spellings???). I believe the principal was a lady named Mrs. McQuire. My grandfather told me he went to the same school when he was a child. I lived at 4414 New Town Road, and would sometimes walk home for lunch.

i use to go to 70x as well
and boy have they made improvements!!!
they have a new principal, build a new - gym sized pool- (it is currently in used)
they updated the auditirium- now it is not an imbarrasment to graduate there, and they are more strict-- also a new playground in the roof- updated kindergarten house.
the school is about 80- something years old- very old.

I grew up at 37 Featherbed Lane in the 1940's and 1950's, the house just up from that private house you photographed. There were about a dozen of us kids all about the same age growing up on Fetherbed Lane. We used to sit on the stairs to the private house when we weren't being chased by the home owner; we played stick-ball using the garage door, painted with a vertical home-plate, and hitting the ball into Inwood Ave, which it faced.
The lot next door to the Davidson Ave. steps was our frontier for "Cowboys & Indians," war games, rock fights, and whatever else we could imagine. I attended PS 70, a wonderful school, was taught to swim in the pool by Mr. Bone, who had the boys swimming classes. The Mt. Eden Synogogue, near Claremont Park. I too have very fond memories of growing up there with my friends, most of whom I have lost track of.
Thank you eversomuch for putting these pictures on the Web. You did make it possible to "go back", if just for a moment.
