Meeting Genuine Risk (1977-18 August 2008)

Newstead Farm in Upperville, Virginia

August 18, 2008: Genuine Risk passed away in her paddock this morning at the Newstead Farm. While I had hoped to be able to see her one more time this fall, I am so happy that I had the opportunity to meet her and be in the presence of a true Champion. The caption below is what I originally wrote after meeting her the summer of '07.

This is Genuine Risk, 30 years old, and ranked 91st in the Thoroughbred Champions rankings of the 20th Century. She won the Derby in 1980 and is only 1 of 3 fillies to ever win.
When Barbaro passed away I started wondering how many Kentucky Derby winners were still with us. And what farms were taking care of them?
That search brought me to Genuine Risk who has been living out her retirement at the famous Newstead Farm owned by Bertram and Diana Firestone. When I found her, I called the Farm and asked if I could come see her. At that point they told me about the annual Hunt Country Horse Farm Tour when all the horse farms in the area open up to visitors and that would be the time to visit her. It was a great opportunity to visit these horse farms that are normally closed to the public.
On a personal note, I was able to spend quite a bit with Ginny and got LOTS of hand kisses. She seemed to really enjoy all the people coming to see her. It was an absolute thrill to meet this champion.
