Hatley Park is on the traditional territory of Fist Nations people, who lived on this land for thousands of years. In 1906, James Dunsmuir, former premier and lieutenant-governor of British Columbia bought the property and built Hately Castle three years later. In 1940 the Government of Canada established a navel training college and it was renamed Royal Roads Military College. It is now leased by the B.C. Provincial Government who have established Royal Roads University. The grounds are extensive and beautifully maintained for a public park.
