Convention Center, Phoenix, Arizona, 2007

I saw this man studying his notes outside the entrance of the convention center. He does not notice the dramatically surreal play of reflection on the doors, but we do. It creates an incongruity. He is essentially inactive, a study in repose, while the tinted glass doors reflect a cubistic version of a theatre across the street. The theatre performs in the glass to an invisible audience.

The reflection seems reflecting his mind; and I looking through the window of his soul... very strange and power feeling to it.

Your comment cuts to the heart of the image, Aloha. This image is based on juxtaposition of contrasting movement, scale, and color. The incongruties tell the story.

This is a classic composition, and what works for me is the stillness of the man studying versus the dynamic blur of the reflection, again a juxtaposition of individual focus and the dynamism of the city.

You make me look at those doors, Jenene, not as reflections, but as a new and exciting opportunity beyond those doors. You put it so beautifully here -- he is probably reviewing facts he has gathered inside that building. But there is more to life than facts. It is how we can use those facts in our work that really matters and that involves creativity. Your comment leads me to think that this reflection could well symbolize the excitement of the creative process itself -- what you call "entering the less prescribed world." Thanks for putting my picture into a fresh prespective.

It is wonderfully geometric, simple and complex at the same time. I love the anticipation it makes me feel. I'm preparing (with the man on the bench) to enter the less prescribed world beyond the doors, where the reflection hints at things that may not be so cut and dried. Beautifully symbolizes a leap of faith - a jump into the deep end, so to speak

Look at the legs -- you are right -- they follow the design of the image. Thanks, Kal, for noting this.

I like it for the geometry and the wonderfully complimentary position of the man, which echoes the lines of the building, as well as the refelction...great image Phil. K

I always compose my images for a purpose, Alina. I think you meant to say "bench" here -- yes, it does pull the eye in to the man. We stop for a moment to appreciate his study, and then sweep right to see what he does not see.

I like this one. Almost all strong lines are parallel to the frame of the photo. Did you make it on purpose? One exception is the line of brunch which leads our eye to the man.
