Yet another Matt Millen Top 10 draft pick has been officially certified
as a bust, as the Lions have shipped Mike Williams to the Oakland
Raiders. The trade also sent backup quarterback Josh McCown to Oakland
in exchange for the Raiders' fourth-round pick (105th overall) tomorrow.
It amazes me how much of a free pass Millen gets for his utter failure
as the Lions' general manager. The analysts on NFL Network were actually
saying it was a smart move for Millen to get the pick. Yes, you read
that right: They think Millen is "smart" because he used the 10th pick
on a player, got nothing out of that player for two years, and then used
that player as part of a trade that netted the 105th pick in return.
Brilliant.
For the Raiders, I think McCown has a reasonable chance of being the
starter in September. They might decide that JaMarcus Russell needs a
little time to get used to the offense before they throw him to the
wolves, and that means McCown might just bridge the gap.
