The Lonely Planet Vietnam book implies that the Vietnamese haven't yet learned to make
good wine. But we saw "Dalat Red" for sale, tried it, and found it quite acceptable.
At the restaurants and hotels that listed wine, there were imported wines (California,
Australia, South Africa, Argentina, France) at very high prices; Dalat Red was often
not listed, but was available with a big smile and at a fraction of the price if you
asked for it. About $4.00 Australian. But at one restaurant, in Buon Ma Thuot, there
was some apparent difficulty in finding Dalat Red – or perhaps in understanding our
request – but eventually this bottle was offered. "Same same but different", as they
say. Note the word "export". Same price. And this wine was really good! Recommended.
