Jo Davies County, Illinois

The railroad based the forced-draft system on the patented “Churchill method of Ventilation.” Blowers or fans used a system of ductwork to force air into a large chamber, which the company called a “Nozzle” attached to the tunnel entrance. An operator would start the blowers as a steam locomotive entered the chamber. Smoke and fumes would be directed ahead of the engine away from the cab.
