Bowermans Nose - Dartmoor

Bowerman's Nose on Hayne Down. The distinctive profile of the
granite pinnacle features widely in the pictures and literature of the Moor.
The name is thought to have arisen from an ancient bowman 'bowerman' who, according to legend,
was out hunting one day with his dogs when they spooked a group of witches.
The witches cursed him and, so it is said, turned him into the pinnacle and his hounds into the
wierdly shaped rocks we see today at the foot of it.
Map Ref: SX 739806. An easy-to-walk-to place about a mile from Hound Tor.
As the road is narrow and there is limited parking, ideally park and walk from Hound Tor,
or if you're not into hiking you can sometimes park off the gated road on Hayne Down
and walk the 1/4 mile or so up to the pinnacle.

Most photographers like to shoot the pinnacle with it standing to the right of the
picture, and there's nothing wrong with that as it is a pleasing ' rule of thirds' composition,
but what I've attempted here is to make the shot rather more dynamic and 'Dartmoorish'
in the sense of giving it authentic scale and emphasisising the human connection
with the village of Manaton - in the distance to the right.

Polarising filter used to bring out the North sky.
