Erosion's Abstract
Darwin, California February 2007

Phil Douglis is fond of old eroding cars and trucks. He even has a gallery of them ( http://www.pbase.com/pnd1/cars ) I am usually not so taken by them, but I found this eroded door label on the side of a truck and thought time and wind had created an interesting abstract.

Thanks, Tim, for the link to my cars gallery. Yes, I am delighted by the significance of decaying automobiles, and your image helps define why. There is a sense of whimsical beauty in this image, which carries a great irony along with it. How can decay be beautiful? Finding answers to that question is what draws me to rusting cars as subject matter. Your image offers one such answer -- the colors, geometry, and impressionsitic explosions of paint speak of the sun in all of its glory -- the very element of nature that is helping to destroy this car. Talk about irony!
