Swannie Meets Mardi for the First Time

Bayou Metairie in City Park

Swannie, on left, has been so lonely since Katrina. Swans are sociable creatures and mate for life.
The Newcomers Club of New Orleans raised $1500.00 to purchase a mate for Swannie and he arrived on March 9 from Illinois but Swannie was nowhere to be found. The Newcomers Club named the male swan Mardi (for Mardi Gras.)
On the morning of March 10 Swannie appeared and this is the very first meeting of Swannie and Mardi.

Colleen, What a precious picture. You were so lucky to have been there when Swannie found them.

Coleen - Thank you very, VERY much. I've been chasing Swannie for months...she changed from the Bayou (way back near the railroad tracks past DeSaix Blvd.) to the Museum lagoon and then to Bayou Metairie. She came to me every time I called, but lately has been petrified when the damn seagulls zoom in. I heard on TV last night (after not finding her at all yesterday) that the new swans were here. Today, I saw 5 together near the peristyle, another flying high in the air (going where???), then drove around the museum and when I returned to the peristyle, there was one by itself away from the others. It did not come to me when I called, so I don't think it was Swannie. How many did the Newcomers Club put in yesterday??? I am thrilled that she has company. Thank you very much. XXX Elise Beron

Coleen, this picture is perfect. I feel as if I'm intruding on a precious moment in time. Thank you for being the inspiration behind the purchase of this swan.
