On a whim, I climbed down to the beach just below the lighthouse to see how it looked from there. Although I have been here numerous times, I had never checked this out. What attracted me to this shot was the more commanding perspective of the lighthouse and the rich early evening light that made the lighthouse glow against the darkening sky. Both aspects enhance its visual importance that resonates with its functional importance. The inclusion of the hostel next to the lighthouse paints a richer sense of context that is unique to Pigeon Point.
Possible improvements (Critique):
What could have enhanced the image would have been to include the flash of the light, but that wasn't as visible in the daylight. The value-add of including the flash is that it expresses what is unique about and the core purpose of lighthouses, the light itself. However, in this case, the coast guard has installed an electric beacon in front of the actual lantern as the actual lens assembly has been turned off for years as they await more funds to do repairs. Also, waiting until later would have emphasized the time when the need for the lighthouse is more functionally critical, at night.
