Massey Ferguson Tractor Model TE 20

Christchurch - New Zealand

This tractor was one of seven made available to Dr Vivian Fuch's "Commonweatlth Trans-Antartic Expedition" (1955-58).
Five modified tractors were used for Sir Edmund Hillary's Ross Sea party
to assist with the construction of Scott Base in 1957.

With a routed having been scouted up the Skelton Glacier by dog teams and aircraft,
three of the tractors, of which this is one,
left Scott Base on 14th October to lay depots from Ross Island 700 miles towards the Pole. Successful but with fuel supplies low
they pressed on to the Amundsden-Scott South Pole arriving on 4th January 1958,
being the first party to reach the pole since Scott's party in 1912.
