"Chains" / People Power Monument

EDSA.2006.21c.JPG

PEOPLE POWER monument commemorating the peaceful revolution of February 22-25, 1986 that brought down the Marcos dictatorship.
This sculpture located at EDSA Highway cor. Santilan Road is made by famed Philippine sculptor Eduardo Castrillo http://www.eduardocastrillo.com/ .

To quote Sir William Wallace a.k.a. Braveheart (c. 1270 – August 23, 1305. Hey, how appropriate - it's his Death Anniversary today!): "FREEEEEDOM ...!!!!"

A chain-linked fence (or cyclone fence) can be seen in the foreground, while broken
chain/shackles on the main figure's hands symbolizing "freedom" is seen in the background.

Or how about this one?

About the monument: It is located on the very spot as mentioned in the caption above where major events like rallies, vigils, and civil people power crowds gathered for days (only going home to refresh themselves) beside the Police and Military Camps of Crame and Aguinaldo upon the rallying call made by the late Jaime Cardinal Sin. Their main goal was to convince its respective personnel to withdraw their all-out support for the Marcos regime so that he may peacefully concede and allow the true winner of the snap elections in the person of Mrs. Corazon C. Aquino to take over.

The image of Senator Ninoy S. Aquino is shown as the individual image on the left: his assassination on the airport tarmac upon his return to run as an oppositional candidate for the Presidential snap elections was undoubtedly questionable ... it was this momentous event that finally snapped the general population into their senses to finally take collective action.

The unshackled woman on the main part of the monument represents the freedom of Mother Philippines … the people around her consisting of men, women, and children from all walks of life be they rich, poor or in the middle class. They are shown led by the Filipino religious like priests, nuns and seminarians, the latter which at times acted as crowd control barriers. And all this flanked
by a major backdrop of the Philippine Flag.

This monument therefore represents a major political, social and spiritual turning event close to the heart of Pinoys … some even say that this very spot as seen from above represents one huge cross that perhaps signifies the collective suffering of a people who after 4 days of tense moments ("will we be bombed, tear gassed, shot at and/or be trampled upon by the awaiting tanks or by sheer crowd panic?") will finally overcome so that everyone can start anew on a clean slate …

“It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness …” Ok? :-)

We should still understand the meaning of the monument.

Well Steven - you're in luck!

Yes, I DO have close-ups of this monument taken sometime during this year's People Power Celebrations ...
These, however, will perhaps be used in a proposed photo project publication of mine about "Pinoy People Power: The Road to Revolution" in time for the event's upcoming 25th Anniversary. But I MAY post some in my "Philippine Sculptures/Shrines/Monuments" galleryhttp://www.pbase.com/carinoza/monuments pretty soon ... :-)
