Sadly, due to stone robbing, down the centuries, there is no masonry, now remaining,of Clavering Castle. An ancient site, thought by many scholars,to be the "Richards Castle" to which supporters of the Normans fled, following a rumpus in the English King's court,in 1042.The ditches, even today, are huge,as can be seen from this shot. The green field,is the site of the castle, surrounded on all sides,by huge ditches, all of 30 feet deep.
