I think I did this the hard way by using the shape tool heart, painted black,dropped shape layer to top painted layer, used magic wand to select black shape and delete. This did let the picture and 2nd layer show through but it might have been easier to just cut and pasted it on in the first place. I also could not find a heart shape for the brush tool so I made a heart for the brush tool from the shape tool selection. It worked.
