Redux

let's try this again
or redo :)
A very kind Pbaser gave me some detailed information on layer masks and texturing and a bunch of other stuff so this is a preliminary attempt. One of my favorites from a Jill shoot this summer, the original is ok http://www.pbase.com/kleaf/image/64416730, but lacking something, so I thought I'd try this masking thing. Still uber confused so I've gotta read about it but it was fun trying.

Canon EOS 5D
1/160s f/2.8 at 200.0mm iso100 full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto

Hey--terrific work, Karen!!! I'm so glad to see you putting my suggestions to use!!!! :-) (That's the great thing about sharing knowledge...it always comes back to you, in a way you would never have imagined! )

This was a good choice for a textural piece...and for what it's worth, we'll cover this technique in more detail, in one of our salon lessons, further down the road...but if you should want to come early for a meeting--or stay later, I'd be happy to do a private session with you--we can do some serious work on layer masks! :-) Just let me know, if/when you'd like to do that. :-)

And BRAVO, for this one!!! (Nice to see you got such a terrific response on it, too!! :-))

for me Karen this photograph takes away everything that was great about the original... the atmosphere, how natural it was. let the light and her expression do all the talking.... not photoshop ;)

If you haven't got the mask thing down when / if you come to DC I'll give you a little tutorial I got from Vincent Versace, a layer mask virtuoso! -BJ This came out very well by the way! V. -BJ

Karen, if this is what you produce when you are uber confused, I can't wait to see what you do when you've got it figured out!!!!
This is a stunning image!!!!!!!!!!
Cant wait to see more!!!!

Uber cool! Well done Karen. Especially for a first attempt!

I like both images. Obviously this one is more intense, but the softness and natural feeling I get from the other is good, too.

Beautiful, but so was the original.

The enhancements look good, but when you photograph someone who has eyes like these there is not much more you need to do.

Masking is the bottom line of life .... but she'd look sexy over-exposed with no texture. You just ran my temperature up!

I don't think you've done too badly at all. This is a wonderful and striking portrait.

What a beautiful portrrait - greatly enhanced by your edits.
I would be grateful to know what you did - because it was most effective. You've created a masterpiece - look at those eyes !!

Loved the originol
This is so much more interesting
very nice indeed
Guest 11-Jan-2007 05:46
The problem with Jill's portrait is that the background is not looked at so thoroughly by the viewers ;-) Seriously, I find it very difficult to use, and you did a very good job.

Riveting. Voted!

Wow! You can see why this stuff is so popular. The original is a gorgeous photograph, but now you have created and awesome 'image'. Keep at it, K!! Vote

I don't know what you did either, but the comparison shows this one is much more powerful and dramatic. Fabulous. V

This is gorgeous, Karen. Like she is stepping out of an oil painting.
