Motorized commuter, Marrakesh, Morocco, 2006

With her head covered by a scarf instead of a helmet, this Marrakesh commuter enjoys her own transportation to and from the job. The contradiction here is the clash between the traditional costume of the woman and her free wheeling approach to commuting. Many Islamic women in Morocco do not wear traditional costumes such as this. To find one that does sitting on a motorbike is the opposite of what we might expect to find. She was chatting with a friend while I made this image – a moment later she departed in a roar of exhaust fumes. The street was too crowded for me to get a clear shot of her burning rubber – it would have been even more contradictory.

Thank you, Marisa, for seeing this image as emblematic of the path that extends from both opposites and contradictions -- the "middle way." I think my friend Tim picked up on that in his comment as well. Within each of these young women, there is something of the other.

And this image is a perfect representation of the middle way, Phil!

Yes, I remember, Marisa. There is always a middle path that extends from both opposites and contradictions. Thanks for reminding us of this fact. It was our long conversations about this process that led to the creation of this very gallery two years ago. Good to see you back.

yes, there's in a way a contradiction and paradox here, but also we can think about new generations that keep traditions and in a way enrich their own culture when accepting technology (the good one).. so the middle path that lead humans to a more integrated and developed life. Do you remember? ;)

You are right -- the traditionally dressed woman is a biker, while her modish colleague chooses to use alternative transport. This image is indeed full of opposites and contradictions.

I notice that the woman she is chatting with seems to be the epitome of modern -what ever she has in her hand is modern and shiny and her stance is very stylish - yet it is the more traditionally styled woman who is the "biker."
